I use a website that allows me to print a schedule of information. When I
chose print it opens the data in another window which I can print. It gives
me the following options for printing. .pdf, .xls,.rtf, .txt, .htm, .tif.
All the options open except .xls, and .rtf. Those files that require ms word
or excel to open. I am using xp sp2. I can open any word or excel file on
any other website where I am required to click on the link. I then get the
option to open or save. When I try it from this site something tries to open
in a new window and then disapears, thats it. If I go to the site and try to
open from a computer with xp sp1 it works fine. When I click print for those
two file extensions the standard open or save message pops up and everything
works fine from there. I am using zone alarm and both word and excel have
permission to access the internet and I can open an excel or word file from
any other site. Do I have a setting wrong in IE after installing sp 2?

Hi,
I think this article (somewhat) describes the problem which was reportedly
fixed in IE6 SP1.
318761- Open Button in Dialog Disabled When You Browse or Redirect to .rtf
or .csv Files:

You might ask if the webmaster would offer the files in doc and xls format,
possibly in addition to rtf and csv. Or, on the XP SP2 machine, you could
right-click the download link and choose "Print target" or "Save target
as..."

You might stop IE from trying to open rtf and csv files by changing settings
in Folder Otions> File Types.

Hope this helps,
Don
