file unavailable

I have just loaded Word 2003 .. now i can not open files in the program. I get a message that the "file is unavailable". I have tired EVERYTHING. What can i do to open files ? Someone please HELP !!!!
 
Disable the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus.

If Suzanne's suggestion doesn't work (I expect it will), let me know if you
can open files from within Word when Word is already open.
