File Types + Icons

Hi all

Like probably a lot of people, I have Winamp installed on my PC to play MP3
files. Does anyone know how I can get rid of the File Type that Winamp
forces Windows Explorer to show? Basically, I want my MP3 files to show as
"MP3" and, similarly, I want MP2 files to show as "MP2" and so on, not as a
"Winamp Media File"...

Also, most importantly, I want FLAC files to stay showing as "FLAC" and I
want them to retain their own unique icon... Every time I run them through
Winamp, it overrides everything and turns them into "Winamp Media File"s
that look the same as MP3s - and it's annoying!!

Can anyone help?

You can change the file type description with "folder options" in either
Explorer or the Control Panel. Changing the description (it is just a
string) this way changes what you see from your account.
Making a global change involves a registry edit.

My system reports MP2 as "movie clip". That is probably what the original
name was.

This doesn't work. Changing the description (and icon) of one of the types
of file related to Winamp (such as FLAC) results in ALL the file
descriptions/icons being changed to match - even MP3 files...

You can change the file description and icon associated with files via Explorer >
Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab.
Scroll to the type you want to change and select it.
Click the Advanced button.
Since WinAmp has an icon selection in it's preferences, if you change the icon it may
revert back to that of WinAmps. I'm unaware of any way to disable the icon selection
in WinAmp.

I take it you have the file types associated with WinAmp in it's preferences. Is
"Restore file associations....." selected, it is in mine although I don't know
positively if it matters.

I can't say why your file extensions don't show as MP3/2 etc. or FLAC if none of
the above pertains to the issue. All of my audio files have the proper extension
although they all use the same icon which doesn't matter to me. All I can suggest is
to remove the association yet leave "Show WinAmp in context menu in Explorer"
selected.

All I can suggest is to remove the association yet leave "Show WinAmp in
