Windows XP File types have gone haywire

Problem ive been having recently on XP Pro. All filetypes and their behaviour have gone wild. Now when I try opening image folders they will open in notepad, when I open a drive in My Computer it will bring up the search window, so on, so forth. Is there any way I can reset the filetypes and their behaviour?

P.S. Can't find my XP installation disc, just as a warning for those suggesting that.:D
 
When did the problem first start?
Do you use Anti-Virus & a Firewall?
Tried using system restore??

Whoops I am afraid your gonna be stuck.... unless you can update patches from Windows update:wave:
