File Type rename

XP2 Home SP2.

How do I change the "File type" display in Windows Explorer to show the file
type name that I want. For example I would like to change "Adobe Acrobat
7.0 Document" to just "Acrobat" and "Microsoft Word Document" to just
"Word".

I tried changing the name in Tools | Folder options | File types (PDF) |
Advanced, and clicked on "OK", but it did not stay renamed, as it never
showed just "Acrobat" in Explorer's display, and was back to Adobe Acrobat
7.0 Document when I clicked on File Types | Advanced.

On searching this newsgroup in Google Groups, I came across an entry from
Oct 2003:

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...wsxp.customize&rnum=13&hl=en#3e626db988044a85

"Click on tools>folder options and flip to the file types tab. Select the
entry marked jpeg and click in advanced. In the edit file type dialog enter
the new name and click ok. Repeat this procedure for jpe and jpg files as
well. After this the file type should show whatever was specified by you.
Please do post back if you have any difficulties."

There was no post back so I assume that the OP had no problem. But it
doesn't work for me. Any ideas?

TIA

You should be able to change this by editing the Registry entries for
the file type, here f. e. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that.

Some more info...

I have been able to change one or two names in the "Edit file type" dialogue
box, but most are not editable. ISTM that the limiting factor on whether or
not a name can be changed is whether the "Browse in same window" box is
greyed out or not! If it is, you can't change the "File type" name. if it
isn't, you can. Why this should be (and why the box is greyed out in most
cases anyway), I have no idea.

If you talk about the dialog in Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder
Options > File Types > Edit: The settings that are available here
depend on entries called EditFlags in the Registry.
