Why don't you want to display file extensions?

This is a bad deal as malware can mess you up.

WinAmp has "stolen" the file associations.

Doing the following will probably be a waste of time as WinAmp will probably
just steal the file associations again.

Open Windows Media Player | Tools | Options |
File Types tab | Click the Select All button |
Click Apply | Click OK

[[If you install other multimedia playback programs on your computer, they
may interfere with your Player file types settings. For more information
about setting file type ownership in other multimedia playback programs, see
the documentation that came with those programs. ]]

[[If you want to make another player the default player for a specific file
type, clear the check box for it in the File types list. ]]

[[If a selected check box is dimmed, Windows Media Player has only partial
ownership of the file type. Multiple file extensions are assigned to the
file type, but the Player only plays some of those extensions by default. To
give the Player full ownership of a file type, double-click the dimmed check
box. ]]

Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

Hello everybody
I have a lot of audio files in different formats, using WinAmp as the audio
player, the OS is Win XP SP1.
The problem is that windows shows all files as 'Winamp media file' instead
of showing the real type (MP3,Wav, MIDI...etc).
The same problem also applies to video files and the videa player.

How can I set windows to show the file types without having to show the file
extension?

Thanks a lot

Activo,

You can change the descriptions in File Types in Folder Options.

Open Folder Options...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
Click the File Types tab | Scroll down to and click on ASF |
Click the Advanced button | The Edit File Type applet will open with the
description highlighted in the Description box | Type or paste in a new one
from the list below | Click OK |

Scroll down to and click on AVI, etc.

Description box
[[Specifies a description of this file type, and provides a space for you to
type in a new one. This description appears in folder windows when you
display files in Details view.]]

You can also change the icon if you like.

Activo,

Your clock seems to be off. You are posting in future.

What do you have against showing the file extensions?

Most all of my folders are in Detail view and I do not even have file Type
displayed in most folders.

1. Show file extensions.
2. Figure out what the different icons are so you can identify the file type
by looking at the icon.
3. Assign different icons to the different file types if they are not
different with WinAmp. (I know nothing about WinAmp)
4. See #1.

Thanks Wes
It seems that I have a different setting, there is no Advanced button for
some of the media files, there is a Restore one that restores the original
file association, when this is done (and definitely not what I want) the
Restore changes to Advanced with all the nice options you mentioned.
Is there a way through this?

Thanks again for your help.

Dear Wes
Thanks for your help, some people out there just do not like to show the
file types, at least Microsoft put the option and I am just using it.
It seems the problem is a struggle between Windows and WinAmp for control.
If I find a way around this I will post you.
Thanks again for your help and time.
