In Windows Explorer (Windows XP Pro sp2) some files do not have
characteristic icon though the program that opens such files is defined and
works properly. Is there a way to prescribe these files their characteristic
icons?

What icons? For what file type(s)? Give us a hint.

OK! Those small icons one sees beside files' names in the Windows Explorer.
As I understand an icon corresponds the program that open the file (maybe I
am wrong!). When I open Windows folder I do not see characteristic icons
biside .dv3, .ipe, .jtx and .for files for example and files without
extensions. And so on and so forth. In other folders such files as .pdf and
..ps have no characteristic icons. They are the files I am interested most of
all.

It had to be mostly file extensions that I never heard of. :-)

dv3 = www.filext.com never heard of it. A Google search for dv3 files
brought up five results and all were The page cannot be found. What program
is associated with dv3 files?

ipe = ItsPersonal File? http://www.rkssoftware.com/itspersonal/overview.html

jtx = www.filext.com never heard of it. Some kind of a Mac deal?

for = Font Resource File? [[16-bit DLL/EXE files that seem to contain
nothing more than a resource giving the path of a TTF font.]]

pdf = Portable Document Format. Could be AdobeReader or FoxitReader.

ps = PostScript? PaulShields Song/Module? Works File? AutoCADLT
PostScript Support?

Files without extensions could be .lnk files (Shortcuts) or
Internet Shortcuts or anything, like HOSTS, for example.

Open Folder Properties...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK
File Types tab | Locate a file extension, PS for example |
Highlight PS | Advanced button | Change Icon button |
Select an icon | OK your way back out

I knew this way but it did not work for .pdf files though I've tried several
icons. Let me give you some history. I had Adobe Reader 7 on my comp but
then I desided to return to Version 6. So I uninstalled 7 and installed 6.
After these procedures I got the problem with icon. When I look at Folder
Option panel File Types I see icon beside the PDF PDF File. Lower for
Details for 'PDF' extension I see
Opens with (characteristic icon) Adobe Reader 6.0
You have customized files with extension 'PDF'. To restore these files to
their default type (Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Document), click Restore.
If I click Restore icon became uncharacteristic though program that open
files is defined as Adobe Acrobat 6.0.
As for other types of files they are unimportant for me. I wrote about them
only to answer your question.
