When viewing the Settings/Folder Options/files Types/change.

the check box for "Always use the selected program to open this type of
file" is greyed out. I want to change the file association and the icon
that appears but the "check box" apparantly wont let me.

What do I need to do to be able to change the association permanently?

any help appreciated.

Hello Jake,

I'd like to get more information from you in order to investigate this
issues for you.

What sort of file are you trying to associate with Windows Media Player?

I'd be glad to assist once I can get that information!

Thanks!

OK..thanks.

the file is a midi....or .mid
These files, have an icon representive the app. of Roland VSC (a
synthesizer/sequencer).
When double clicking .mid the icon (RVSC), the file will correctly open in
Power Tracks Pro, which is what I asked it to do.
When viewing the properties of the .mid file, it also correctly show that
Power Tracks is the "Open With".
When going to change, the list of "Recommend Programs" show VSC selected.
It also shows the check box for "Always use the selected program to open
this kind of file" as greyed out or unavailable.
I believe this is why the icon still incorrectly displays.

Any thoughts?

Thank you

Hi Jake,

Heh, fellow musician. :-)

I am going to ping the Windows Media Player group and see if they've
encountered this issue and follow up with their response.

Offhand it sounds to me like your MIDI music playback device (the Roland
VSC) is defaulted to ONLY select PG Music's applications. Were these MIDI
drivers provided by PG Music (the folks who develop Power Tracks Pro)? I
see that they offer this on their site. It MAY be an issue of PG Music
having the Virtual Sound Canvas being a proprietary plug-in to their
applications, Band-in-a-Box and Power Tracks Pro. You may want to check
with PG Music's tech support and see what they have to say.

In the meantime, I will ask the Windows Media Player team about it. If you
get a response from PG Music before I get a response from the WMP team,
please post it here to enlighten us. :-)

Thanks!
