I have two home PC's one running W2K and the other running XP. I have some files that I'd like to transfer between the W2K PC to the XP PC. Is there a native tool in windows to support file transfer? I see that FTP is installed on each but I cannot find instructions on how to get FTP working. What options are you aware of for file transfer? What works best?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi,

Are they networked together? The simplest method is drag and drop.

Yes. They are on the same network. The W2K PC is my work PC and has been setup by our office system admin. The XP PC was installed by me. I have tried to make a shared file make that file available but it did not work exactly as planned. Are there some clear steps that you've seen to make file a "networked" file? If you could point me to the steps, I could give it a try (again).

Thanks

Stev

Rick,

Thanks for the article. I've followed the directions and now I'm getting the error message (on my W2K machine) that "The network place cannot be added because the following error has occurred: there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"

In my setup, the XP PC is sharing the file (it shows up as "shared" under "my network places") and I've turned off my SW firewall to make sure that I'm not blocking file access at all. On my W2K PC, I've gone to "add network places" and selected the "add network place" wizard and typed in the path. What's not clear is the expected path name. For example, the XP PC is named "Debra-pc" and the shared file is "My Pictures" but it appears that the file name is now "\\Debra-pc\shareddocs" or "shareddocs on Debra's Home PC" depending on what you are reading.

Any ideas?

Thanks again for all of the help.

Steve

Hi Steve,

Seems to be a problem with the credentials, but this is not my area of
knowledge. You may want to take this to the network_web group for further
assistance. The path, by the way, is \\Sandra-pc\"whatever name you
indicated" in the folders' share tab.
