I have just upgraded from Win98SE to WinXP Home, and I
had my old data files on CD. I had the Microsoft works
program with some database files that I would really like
to be able to access, but in Windows XP it won't read the
database file extension. I tried changing it to notepad,
but that makes it impossible to read. Does anyone have
an idea of a way I can get at this info by opening with a
different file type? Or any other suggestions? Thanks
for any help for this problem.

No, I didn't realize when I upgraded from Win98SE to a
new computer with Win XP that it didn't come with a word
processer that handled database, spellcheck, etc.

Install your old copy.

Is it okay to install the old copy of Microsoft Works
from Win98Se on to the new Windows XP? I was told that
programs working with the old Operating System couldn't
be run withour re-installing. As my old Microsoft Works
was pre-installed, I don't have the installation CD but I
have a copy of the program from my DVD Backup I did on
the old computer. Does this make sense? Thanks for any
help.

You have to buy a new copy. If it came preinstalled you aren't allowed to transfer the license.
