If you have a burner, burn all your data files to a CD and that will be your
backup for a just incase.

Or you can buy a new hard drive and use that one to load XP on and slave
your old drive with your data on it and copy it over.

There are no guarantees on any upgrade and clean installs are always
recommended over upgrades. Take hustedj's advice and back up your data to
cd, also the new hard drive is what I would also recommend. Leave the old
one out during a clean install and there's no chance of loosing your data
because you can always go back.

By using a procedure called, not surprisingly, backing up your important
files. It's the only 100% safe way!

How do I make sure I don't lose any files when I upgrade to Windows
XP?

Even though the risk is small, you can never be completely sure.
That's why you should always backup anything you can't afford to
lose before taking any big step like an operating system upgrade.
