I am having trouble transfering my files and settings from
my old computer (Windows Me) to my new one (XP).
I have the latest version of the wizard, downloaded from
microsoft.com. I copied it to a floppy, which I am using
as the wizard disk for the old computer.
I am using a serial cable connecting the two computers.
After the computer connection is established, when the
wizard is transfering the files, the program stalls.
There is no error warning. It just stops transfering.
The drawing of the little files jumping from one computer
to the other contiues to move, but the transferring stops.
I have tried transfering settings one-by-one. Sometimes
this works, but most times it crashes.
Any help?
Thanks,
D

When you say "just stops", how long have you waited before giving up? The
data compiled by the File and Settings Transfer Wizard can easily exceed
several megabytes depending on what you've asked the wizard to capture.
Using the serial cable connection is the absolute slowest method you have
available to you. Things may be working normally, but moving at a snail's
pace.

I'd suggest you try a couple of different things. First, get rid of the
serial connection and try running the wizard over a Local Area Network. You
can configure the "network" using only a direct cable connection using two
network cards and a crossover cable. If you don't have the equipment, you
can purchase the entire shebang - 2 network cards and a short crossover
cable - from www.tigerdirect.com for less than $20.

You could also try to save the FSTW data file to a larger capacity medium,
like a CD-R or a Zip disk, rather than try to transfer the data directly
from computer to computer. This option gets a little more expensive if you
don't already own a CD burner or a Zip drive, though...

I have waited hours and hours. The first time I tried it,
it said it would take 8 hours to transfer my files. I set
it up to run overnight. In the morning it still said 7
hours, 20 minutes, and the timer had stopped counting
down. I gave it another hour and after breakfast it was
the same.

I am a novice, but I'll give the network a try. Do I have
to install the network cards by opening up the computers?
That scares me, but I'll try.
Thanks,
D

I'm having the same problem...the progress bar has not
advanced in over 12 hours. Is this normal?
