I've just installed a firewire card in my desktop so I can transfer files
between my Sony laptop and the desktop. I connected the two computers
together and- nothing! So I figure I need a file transfer program to get
the two computers talking- any suggestions, especially how to get them to
start recognising the connection? Would a standard FTP program do?

Thanks for any help.

Why not use a crossover patch cable... you do not need any programs. Besides
it is fast and you can use it anywhere not just with your laptop and
desktop. All you got to do is to assign an IP and you can do it with network
properties..
