File transfer is dog slow

I'm trying to transfer files from host to client using
RDC (mapping drives as needed). Even on 4.5mbps
broadband the connection is painfully slow.

Is there anyway to improve the speed, or just do this
another way?

Basically I'm archiving a remote "My Documents" folder
and bringing it to my computer for backup... but it takes
hours even on broadband!

This operation will be faster--I can't say just how much--but
significantly--if you just use a straight VPN connection, rather than the
file transfer mechanism within Remote Desktop, if that is possible in your
situation.

When you say 4.5mbps broadband, what is the uplink speed at the site the
data is coming from?

the "a" in aDSL connections is for assymetric--meaning that the uplink speed
is often many times lower than the downlink speed, and that will be the
limiting factor in either a VPN or RDP connection.

Remote Desktop seems almost magical in how well it makes use of limited
bandwidth--but the bandwidth issues are still there underneath, and bulk
data transfers will make them apparent every time.
