file transfer from windows 95 to Windows xp

I am attempting to remove a program from my old computer
with Win 95 and install it to new win xp computer. I
copied the floppy, but when I try to install it to new
xp, I have been unsuccessful. I get a dialog box that
says "The drive or network connection that the
shortcut'Medicare.Ink.'is unavailable make sure the disc
is properly inserted or the network resource is
available, then try again". To call me a computer novice
is an insult to novices everywhere. I would appreciate
any advise on how to transfer my program.

That's a pretty big jump to install a 'designed for' win95 app on Windows
XP. First off you can't just transfer it. You'll need to run the application
install for the program on Windows XP, but in this case best to check the
application developer's web site for an updated version of the product.

there are plenty of win95 apps that will run on XP

the problem is you merely put a shortcut to the app onto the floppy


unless this is something extremely simple
it's not likely the who app will fit onto a single floppy
you really need the original software to install it
there usually are registry entries and .dll's necessary


at any rate....any file ending with .lnk is merely a shorcut
 
Windows 95 uses 16 bit file storage...window xp uses 32
bit...they are incompatible...both data and programs. I
have win2k and have option to format drives for 16 or 32
bit. If xp give same options you can copy data to xp from
95 if you format with 16 bit...but it is a much less
efficient file storage sytem, wasting space etc. Usually
not recommended. Don't know of third party software that
can overcome limitations..but there may be some.

Say what? Microsoft Windows 95? Microsoft Windows XP?

I don't think you're going to be able to just copy a shortcut from Windows
95 to Windows XP and expect it to work. You need to install the program on
your XP machine. And programs that were designed for Windows 95 might not
run on your Windows XP machine.
