File Size out of control

I'm dumbfounded. I have been trying to reduce the file size of a PP
presentation. Originally it was one big show and I've split it off into
smaller ones and used hyperlinks. Here's the issue;
I've been to every site I can think of on reducing file size. I've turned
off fastsaves, etc. I went through and deleted objects that I thought might
be unnecessary. None of these things have made a difference. I've gone as far
as deleting ALL the slide and saving. An empty file still saves at 2.7Mb!!

I've selected all (Ctrl-A) and of course nothing shows up. Has anyone heard
of this issue? The presentation will have about 40-50 pages in multiple files
so they can be used in multiple presentations, but currently all the files
are 2-3Mb. I don't look forward to redoing all these shows.

You mention that you turned off fast saves. Did you choose Save As from
the File menu and save to a different name after turning off fast saves?

There are a multitude of places that things can hide in PowerPoint.

Take a look at this page to see if this add-in may be of use. It is only
designed to run on PowerPoint 2000, 2002, and 2003, but may be of service if
you are running one of these.

After turning fast saves off, did you save it under a new filename?
Also, did you embed any sound previously? Click Slide Show > Slide
Transition. Click on the sound dropdown and see if there are any .wav file.
It may have been set to no sound, but the sound may still be embedded in the
presentation.

I'd use Bill's "sizeme" addin (see response from Bill Dilworth himself for
the link) to see what the problem is. I'm betting it's an embedded review
copy.

Thanks everyone for the speedy replies. The file had been saved under
different file names. The original file did have a large picture attached to
it but that part of the presentation is long gone. Thanks for pointing me to
SizeMe, great little add-on. It came back saying that the master size was
huge 2.6MB. I've added a new master and deleted the old, no change. There is
nothing on the Master but a blank page.

I've tried using the "Remove Hidden Data Tool" from MS, still no change. I
have deleted all objects on the pages that I can. Basically I'm down to
saving the file with a blank Master and a Blank page. Still 2.6MB.

Anything else you think I can look at?

Okay. In that case, in a problem file, go to View | Master and then shrink
the view down to, like 25%. Now, with nothing selected, start hitting your
tab key. Does it come across anything in the pasteboard area outside the
slide? I think that's usually where the review copy is. Do this on all slide
masters.

Could you send me the PPT file either thru email (vestprog2 at sign yahoo

content confidential, but would like to see where the file size is being
hidden.

Thanks,

Been there, done that, didn't work! :-(

I did discover the trick of creating a new presentation and importing from
the corrupt file. It has taken a couple of hours to reformat some of the
presentations, but that's a whole lot better than the two days I've been
scratching my head.

I still have no idea what object might have been embedded in the file to
begin with.

Thanks for all your help.

Yep. I've run across this a number of times.

Look for the info here about version tracking:

Stephen,

I'm very glad that you were able to reduce the size of the presentation file
and sorry it was so difficult for you.

If you have a copy of the PPT file while was still large, I would like the
opportunity to examine it. As I had mentioned, there are many, many places
where unintended objects, unwanted elements, and HD consuming crude can get
hidden in a presentation file. These are often difficult to locate, which is
why I wrote the SizeMe add-in. You had said that the add-in reported the
2.8 MB master slide, I'd like to see exactly what and where on the Master
slide the object was.

Again, all content will be handled confidentially.

Thank you,

Bill Dilworth
