file shredder

I just updated my MS AntiSpyware and discovered the file shredder. When I
checked the box to have it appear on the drop down list with a right click
when I am in explorer, it does not work! Does anyone else have this problem
and is there a way to fix it? Thanks.
I tried rebooting after checking the box but that does not work. My OS is
WIN XP home sp1.

I would suggest that you upgrade to SP2 and see if the problem continues.

I would find it amazing if SP2 had anything to do with this problem. There are standard ways to add items to the drop down menu on a right click. Some involve registry modifications and for some reason MS spywares modification does not work.

Hi hilbert;
To my knowledge MSAS Beta1 does not feature a file shredder... or else it's darn
well hidden. This was a feature in Giant's AntiSpyware. Is it possible you
have some remnants of Giant code left on your machine after a previous
un-install attempt? Otherwise, I'm at a loss.

Yes I did have Giant antispyware and my subscription expired. I then updated
it and found the file shredder. I guess it was there all along and I did not
realize it.
In any case, I do not seem to be able to add it to the right click drop down
list. Have you been able to do that?

Hello hilbert,
No, I never had Giant installed here... actually only MSAS for 4 months or so, I
never had the option. When you get around to switching over to MSAS, if you
intend to do that - which I'd think you would without current definition
updates, you'll have to first un-install Giant, per this document or risk
conflicts between the two:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/currentcustomers.mspx

Surprised it's still letting you update though... is that weekly definitions as
well? Because at some point that's gonna break with Windows® Defender doing
updates through Ms Update.

To get the updates I had to furnish the key number, but it seems to get them all the updates. However when I ran it it, the cookie checker no longer seems to work. And I don't yet know if the file shredder works.

How strange. I hope you run another Anti-Spyware as well as Giant, because I'd
be concerned that it's half-broken and leaving you somewhat exposed. You could
probably use either SpyBot- minus Teatimer or ADaware (both free) until Giant is
obviously dead in the water...[/QUOTE]

I think that you've belatedly discovered a feature which (was?) present in
Giant Antispyware, but which Microsoft has removed from the product.

I'm not sure why it has become visible to you at this late date, but I don't
believe this is a part of Microsoft Antispyware, which probably is why it
doesn't work.

I think you would do well to uninstall Giant Antispyware and Microsoft
Antispyware, delete the installation folder(s)?? and all subfolders, and
then reinstall Microsoft Antispyware--I'm hoping that will be close enough
to a clean install of the Microsoft product to remove any anomalies such as
the file shredder that may still be around.

Giant Antispyware is still supported by Microsoft until a given subscription
expires.

http://www.giantcompany.com/default.htm

If Hilbert still has a valid subscription, all the original Giant features
should still be functional Giant Antispyware was a superset of Microsoft
Antispyware.

If the sub has expired, I'd recommend uninstalling Giant (which I've also
never seen!) and then installing Microsoft's version.

I have to apologize, since I noticed that the right click file shredder does work, but you have to click it in the right panel of Explorer, not the left. I never thought the drop down menu would differ from the right column to the left column of Explorer. After the upgrade due to my subscription expiring, I did not see the cookie checker working so I wonder if that was disabled. Will check further on that one.
