I have 2 laptops which I believe have network cards and a desktop which
hasn't. I want to connect them. I have tried putting a cable between the two
laptops but they don't see each other. I have ticked printer and file
sharing. I have W2000Pro Do I need any more software or hardware to make the
two laptops see each other and what do I need for the desktop.
Thanks
Tony

Thanks Yor. I'm new to this so please bare with me. By NIC do you mean
network cards? if so both laptops have them. I do have a "crossover" cable
I'm told which I connect to both laptops Network cards but when I boot both
machines and go into Explorer all I see are the folders for each laptop I
can't see the folders of one laptop on the other? What am I missing?
As I said I'm new to this so any help would be appreciated
Tony

Thanks Stephen I'll try that

1) You need a Crossover cable to make the machines see
each other without a hub.
2) Give each an IP address(laptop1-192.168.100.21 laptop2-
192.168.100.22 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0)

This should get the two laptops talking.

To get the 98box going buy a network card for it and a hub.
connect all three to hub via straight-through cables.

Hi Tony

If you double click on My network places - entire network -
you should be able to see the the 2 computers.

Have you set the IP addresses for the two machines?

you need to edit the TCP/IP properties of the NIC(network
interface card)

192.168.0.1 for one card

192.168.0.2 for the other

This will do the trick

to check you have connectivity between the two machines
click START - RUN - type CMD then enter. This will bring
up a command prompt.

type PING 192.168.0.2 from the .1 machine

you should get a message back saying you have received 4
packets of data.

Once you have established the connection you can create
shared folders on the network

If you are going to be using internet connection sharing
let me know and I will tell you how to do it

Hi Tony

Right click my network places and select properties.
Then right click the network connection select properties

Then higlight the TC/IP properties and select properties

you will then see the option to enter the IP address

enter 192.168.0.1 for one machine and .2 for the other

the subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0

Once you have done this on both machines test the
connectivity by pinging the other machine

start - run - cmd - ping 192.168.0.2 etc
