I have two computers linked together via a router. Both
connect to the internet fine and both can see each other
no problem. Both computers also share one printer over
the network no problem. I want to be able to share
certain files and folders. If I right click on a folder I
want to share and then select to share the folder etc, I
can then see the folder on the other computer but I get
access denied. This happens with folders and drives.

The only thing that does work no problem is if I put any
files I want to share in the shared folder first. Then I
can access them.

Please help, I am very new to this

Thanks

It seems to me that you are using XP Pro with simple file sharing
disabled. When SFS is disabled, you have to create accounts on your
machine that has the shares that match the accounts of all remote users
who want to access your shares.

I recommend you re-enable simple file sharing and put your files to
share in the Shared Documents folder. That folder is accessible to
everyone without you having to create accounts. You can share read-only,
but you can't put a password on the share. If you want passwords, you
should disable simple file sharing and create accounts and set
permissions on those accounts.
