I have two computers running XP pro and a laptop running
XP home, all three are networked through a router. When
they were first netorked together all shared files and
folders could be seen by each of the computers. Now
however, "Computer 1" can see the shared files and such
on "Laptop" and "Computer 2"..."Computer 2" can see all
files on "Laptop" but not "Computer 1"..."Laptop" can see
files on "Computer 2" but not "Computer 1"...If
either "Laptop" or "Computer 2" clicks 'view all
computers in this workgroup' both can see "Computer 1"
but if either click try to double click it to access its
shared files the following message pops up:

"\\Computer1 is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the
requested logon type at this computer."

Any help in fixing this problem would be greatly
apreaceated
..

If you resolve this or come up with any answers could you
please let me know.. have a small business having the same
problem.. the only thing different is the "Computer 1" as
you described has a printer on it that must be shared and
none of the other machines can access it. as for the
laptop, it's running windows 2000.

Found that write up earlier.. going to try it tomorrow...
fingers crossed... Hopefully that will bring the printer
share back as well. ( more important then files ). anyone
notice that alot of these problems happened after the last
set of critical updates from teh windows update site?

yes the problems did only start after the last set up
updates however a computer that was conectecd before them
will worl again now! strange. the computer im trying to
get into the workgroup now is new so im thinking iv just
missed a setting somewhere and it will all work!

Hope you guys don't mind me joining the party. I'm having
a similar problem trying to get to a shared printer that
is attached to one of my XP. I had no problem until I
updated the Window's XP to get the security fixes for the
msblaster worm.

First thing I could see the printer but when I tried to
print to it from the networked XP PC was a message that
the spooler was not available. So I deleted the printer
from both PC running XP ( both the one that was directly
attached and the PC that was connected through the router)
and started all over. Now I can not even see the printer
from the remote PC, but the directly attached PC works
fine.

I have seen also seen the same message about access
permissions , but on my network this appears to be a
problem that comes and goes.

Please let me know if you guys make any progess and I will
do the same for you.

Thanks.

Gil

If you guys have been switchning between classical and
simple file sharing read this fromt eh same web site I
gave you in my last e-mail
----------------------------------------------
Access methods, access rights or passwords not properly set
In Windows XP Professional, if you desire classic file
sharing based on username and password instead of XP's
default method of allowing only Guest access, go to Start,
Control Panel, Folder Options, View, and uncheck "Use
Simple File Sharing (Recommended)". Click on OK.

Note that this is not generally required for file sharing.
Simple File Sharing should work fine, but Classic File
Sharing allows you to assign different access rights to
different user accounts.

Conversely, if you want to access other computers from XP
using the classic method instead of Guest access, use
Control Panel, Computer administration, Group policies,
and find the policy to allow access to other computers
through the actual user name. (Please send me an email and
let me know the exact name of this policy, so I can put it
in here, as I currently use a non-English system with
different names.)

After such a fundamental change, particularly when
changing from Classic to Simple File Sharing, it may be
necessary to remove and re-establish the sharing for all
shares, one by one, in Windows Explorer to make sure the
shares are accessible by Guest. Be sure to remove the
sharing and close the dialog completely by clicking on OK,
then open it again and re-establish the share.

To set or change the password in Windows XP, select
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, System Tools, Local
Users and Groups, Users. Right-click on a user name to set
password. You also have to set permissions for all users
on the shared objects (folders, files, printers, etc.).
Usually this is done through groups, which contain the
users. Later use this same user name and password to log
on from other computers.

Hey gil welcome to the party... well all is said and
done..and I figured a mild short way to fix this whole
mess... after many hours of banging my head on all the
machines..and doing everything under the sun I got fed
up.. the machine that has the printer attached to it (xp
pro) the one that couldn't be accessed from any other
machine. I spent many hours doing this and doing that
going through and editing every setting that i could
find.. switching back and fourth from clasic to simple..
yadda yadda yada.. policy this and that... I finally just
went to the user accounts... turned on the "guest"
account and then went to the users setting and removed
password on it.. Just a simple click of the *&*&^&^%
button, that was that!!!!!... went to the other machines
and BANG there was all the access after a simple click of
save password and clicking OK with no password.. user
acount for it .. which should be greyed out..but if not
will be simply "machine name\guest" and leave the password
blank.. sorry for this being so long winded..but after
many days working around this *(&^%^ issue... think its
well deserved =) as for the printer which was the main
concern.. yes its there and works fine after all of this..
now it's just a matter of making the Printer machine
secure from people just clicking the guest account .. so
go back and try adding a password? then go back to the
machines and add the same password when it asks. this
might do it? still working on it and will check out some
of the fixes that you described in those links.. maybe a
combination of this info.. and what was written will bring
these machines back to "HAHA" normal. tc =)

Hey guys i was having similar problems: at home i have desktop with win98
and laptop with winxp with classic share enabled, i setup the same username
and password on both machines and then i created a share folder and i set
permissions and i removed the everyone group and put in authenticated users,
the first time i tried to access the shared folder from the laptop XP Pro
\\machine name\ $IPC and password pop up, so i put in the password and the
sharing was succesfull. I also noticed that the win98 did not ask for a
password when the XP Pro tried to access shared folders, it just shared with
no problem. Don't know why it didn't ask for it. By the way this is
connected via Netgear router and cable modem. Now at my fathers in laws
house he has a desktop Win XP home with Linksys router and cable modem. I
setup sharing for both my laptop WinXP Pro and his Home XP with the same
usernames and passwords, i can access any shared folder from his desktop
WInXP Home, his desktop can see my laptop but it can't access any shared
folders, so i went into Local Security Settings, User rights assignment and
i added Guest to the "access this computer from the network" and i removed
the Guest from the "deny access to this computer from the net" policy cause
i think it was contradicting, not sure. I went back to the WinXP home
desktop and now i can access shared resources from the laptop xp pro. I am
just not sure if i did this correctly since i have been trying to get this
done for about a week now. I just want to make sure the system is secure
with the way i set it up. I also noticed in the Local Security Settings,
User Rights Assignment , "log on locally" has the Guest account and "Deny
logon locally" also has the Guest account on it, so like before i think this
is contradicting with each other. Sorry for the long story.
