Hello, I have just received and setup my new MN-700 WiFi
router and it works great sharing Internet, but I can't
get to see the files in my desktop PC from my laptop, the
other way works fine however!

The message when trying to access files in my PC from my
laptop is that "... the user doesn't have access to the
resource...: login error...". I have tried many
configurations, even those under the Microsoft Broadband
Troubleshooting web page:
share level permissions
broadband utility was installed on my laptop
Virtual DMZ with desktop PC

Both computers are likely configured: XP SP2, Norton A/V,
sharing permissions, etc.
Desktop: connected through cable, broadband utility
installed
Laptop: wifi, no broadband utility installed

Please your help will be very much appreciated because
this was one of the main factors to buy this router,

Juan Fernando

This is a Windows security issue & thus it is a Windows
issue.

Well lets look at the name of the newsgroup. It starts
with "microsoft"
so that must mean we only talk about Microsoft products.
Next it says
"public" so that means any person can post here. Then it
says
"broadbandnet" so since this is a Microsoft newsgroup it
must be talking
about the Microsoft Broadband Networking. Last but not
least it says
"hardware" So that must mean it is the Microsoft hardware
for networking
that we talk about.

Thus this is not a general networking newsgroup, but one
for the
Microsoft Broadband networking hardware. I'd suggest
either posting in
a general networking newsgroup or one for whatever
version of Windows
you are running.

How are you so sure it's a Windows security issue ??? I
mean as far as I know Windows' security rights at sharing
level should be working fine, in fact it works fine *one
way* but, strangely, not the other!

When I say "... I just set up my newly MN700 router..."
it's a new hardware, in fact it is a Microsoft Broadband
Product hardware. And it comes with firewall capabilities
that *may* limit folder/file sharing capabilities. I have
done all the MBB troubleshooting web page instructs, with
NO luck.

Finally, I've been trying to work around this problem for
more than six hours alone and I posted this forum very
lately, and the least I wanted to read was an answer
treating me as an ugly spammer!

Thank anyway for your kind response,

Hola Juan:

Does the desktop PC have an account with the same username and password as
the account that you're using on the laptop?

Martin

Hello Martin,

Yes, in fact both computers were installed basically the
same: same usernames (my wife and me), same privileges
(both administrators) and no passwords at all.

I have checked both computers again for differences but
I can't find any, except that one can't see other's
shares.

I'm starting to think it has to do with MN-700 wifi
router' firewall capabilities: the only difference I've
found so far would be that desktop PC is in a MN-700's
Virtual DMZ ...

Thanks for your reply,

Juan:

Have you tried just using a crossover network cable between the desktop and
laptop, for troubleshooting? You'll have to give them static IP addresses
first if they're currently getting it from the router. After doing this, you
can try accessing both computers from each other. If the same problem
occurs, then we can pretty much eliminate the router as the problem and you
can better concentrate your efforts on XP and not the router. It just seems
like it's an XP problem because you get the "... the user doesn't have
access to the resource...: login error...," which means you're connecting to
the desktop PC and it's an authentication or access permission problem.

Martin
