I had a hard drive problem. I have loaded another drive with OS and need to
move my pictures and music from the old drive that is now slaved, but because
of administrative issues with My Documents permission is denied. How do I get
past this problem running the new hard drive as master. I believe the old
damaged drive will not last much longer and won't boot by its self. Just
keeps rebooting as you try to use it to fix the admin problem.

You need to boot XP Home into Safe Mode, logon as administrator, take
ownership of the folders for your account or administrators starting at the
root or parent folder being sure to select the option to replace owner on
subcontainers and objects, and then grant administrators full control
permissions to the folders as ownership of an object allows you to configure
permissions. The links explain how to do this in more detail.

As best practice you should ALWAYS have backups of your important files on
external media such as cdrom/DVD disks. If your old hard drive had a fatal
failure you would not be able to recover your files without great expense if
at all. Also just because the operating system on the hard drive kept
rebooting does not mean the drive is bad but more likely a problem with the
operating system. In my experience failing hard drives generally make weird
and clunking noises though not always.
