Two issues: (using Vista computers here, but similar if not identical problem
likely exists in other versions of Windows)
1) login credentials do match but account names had been changed -- have a
workaround for this one, but still want input
computer1 has user Name1
computer2 has user Name2
change both user names Name1 and Name2 to Name3 with set identical passwords
Issue:
Name3 (\\computer1\Name1) will not authenticate for
Name3 (\\computer2\Name2)
for file sharing
Workaround - create new, identical accounts on both computers:
Name4 (\\computer1\Name4) DOES authenticate for
Name4 (\\computer2\Name4)
Why is this workaround necessary in Windows? One would think identical user
names and passwords would be enough for accounts to match.
2) Suppose computer1 accesses shared folder on computer2 using the Name4
login as just described and checks the box "Remember my password" on the
login screen. If Name4 is later removed from sharing permissions, computer1
user receives "you might not have permission to use this network resource"
error, BUT IS NOT SHOWN THE LOGIN DIALOG WHERE ALTERNATE CREDENTIALS COULD BE
SUPPLIED.
How to clear the stored login credentials for this network folder so that
computer1 receives the login dialog again when attempting to access the
shared folder?
Thanks in advance!
