So my home network consists of 3 computers, 2 running XP Pro and 1 running
XP Home. The problem is that the XP Home and one of the XP Pro computers
cannot access the shares on the 2nd XP Pro system through "My Network Places.
This is an outline of what works and doesn't;

XP Pro PC 1
Can access XP Home PC with no problems through any method, and can access
shares of XP Pro PC 2 only directly i.e. \\computer\share. On attempting to
open computer via "My Network Places" the message: \\computer is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions.

XP Pro PC 2
Can access XP Pro PC 1 and XP Home PC with no problems through "My Network
Places" or any other method.

I have already run the network setup wizard, made sure they are on the same
workgroup, that they have unique names, that they are running the browser
service. I cannot for the life of me figure out why it is not working
correctly. Before I added XP Pro PC 2, the other two would work fine. I don't
know if that is a coincidence or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Both other computers can access PC 2's shares directly, so I don't
think that the problem has anything to do with permissions, or with
"RestrictAnonymous" as another reply to your question suggested.

Does "My Network Places" on PC 1 and XP Home PC have shortcuts to
shares on PC 2? I've seen such shortcuts "go bad" for no apparent
reason. Right-click and delete the shortcuts, use "Add a network
place" to re-create them, and try accessing the PC 2 shares again.

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection and click Properties.
3. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click WINS.
6. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

Run "ipconfig /all" on each computer and look at the "Node Type" at
the beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

Dear Steve (and all)

With apologies for jumping in - I have experienced a similar problem - and
implemented the "regedit" as suggested by Steve - and this has STILL NOT
fixed the problem - of getting my HP laptop to see shared files on my IBM
Thinkpad...

I leave you with the following configuration information - as I am stopped
dead in my tracks - on how I will ever get 2 laptops to share files over a
network...

Problem Definition:

HP pavilion (running XP Home SP1), can NOT see shared files on IBM Thinkpad
(running XP Pro SP2), and gives the error message that everyone
reports "\\Tlw-laptop1\tlw is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource <blah blah blah>
then goes on with an even more cryptic message (is that possible?) "Not
enough server storage is available to process
this command", EVEN THOUGH it can SEE the IBM Thinkpad on the network...

I have already already implemented a regedit modification by adding a
DWORD value of 4 for "Mixed" to the
HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters as suggested but
this STILL has NOT fixed the problem...

The configuration information is as follows:

Network/System Background:

Same User name on both computers, same password, both are Computer Admin
accounts.

Dial-up connection to internet - connection is shared - and works i.e. IBM
can access the HP's internet connection over wireless connection.

Wireless peer-to-peer connection set up. NetBios is enabled on TCP/IP on
both computers.

Using simple sharing on IBM Thinkpad running Pro, EVERYTHING is shared,
including C: drive, folders etc. and enabled for users to change (but still
does not work)

Domain name: "HPIBM", setup and apparently working on both systems

Observations: IBM can see and share, shared files on HP (i.e. networking
works - but only ONE WAY i.e. from IBM to HP)

Therefore, I look forward to ANYONE - who can solve the apparently
infinitely complicated problem - "how to network 2 laptop computers..."

Regards,

Todd

Todd,

Your problem is hopefully obvious. The fact that you are hijacking multiple
threads is not going to make you any friends here. Please see my advice in the
thread which you hijacked previously.

Chuck,

As I mentioned in the other thread, your suggestion seems to have cracked it
- as I increased the value of IRPStackSize (on the ThinkPad) to 23.

Once again, apologies for my lack of protocol, as I am a little new to this
newsgroup thing.

Kind regards,
Todd

what if the node type shows "unknown" on both of the networked computers? I
am having an issue where I am not able to view saved video on the main
computer (xp home) or listen to music on main computer (xp home) via the
second networked computer. I am not able to do so wired or wireless?

ANY help would be MUCH appreciated!!!

Node type "Unknown" is OK. The only one that I've seen cause a
problem is "Peer-to-Peer".

You can set the node type to "Broadcast" or "Mixed" and see if it
helps.
