Does pinging the XP box from the Win98 one result in timeout or "unreachable" responses?

If so, do you have a third-party firewall that could be blocking access? Try disconnecting
from the internet, shutting down the firewall and then pinging XP from Win98. If it works, then
the firewall just needs a little configuring.

To do the ping test first you need to know the local IP address of the XP machine. Press
Win+R, enter "cmd" (without the double quotes) enter "ipconfig". The address beginning with
192.168 is the one you want. Open a DOS Box on your Win98 machine and enter
ping 192.168...whatever.

Also, the gateway address on the Win98 machine ~must~ be same as that IP address.
So in Win98, go to the control panel, choose Network, scroll down to the
"TCP/IP -> adapter name...", click properties, click the Gateway tab. The 192.168....
address should be listed.

Tony.
