I got a Linksys wireless router for X-mas. I have the
desktop computer wired into the back of the router, and
I'm trying to do some file sharing with a laptop compter
with a wireless lan card. both machine are running XP
home. I've turned off the XP firewall on both
machines. I'm only able to get the desktop to showup in
the MSHome workgroup, and I can't get the laptop to
showup as a computer on the network. I'm I able to share
files with this setup? If so, what do I need to do to
set this up.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

1) Are both the router and wireless card the same standard (802.11a
and 802.11b/g are not compatible with each other)?
2) Are both computers in the same workgroup?
3) Can you ping the router successfully from both computers?
4) From each computer:
Ping itself by name;
Ping itself by ip address;
Ping 127.0.0.1.
5) Do "ipconfig /all" from both computers, and post the results here.
6) From the desktop computer, logon to the router and check the
wireless settings. Make sure that WEP (WPA), and MAC filtering are
disabled (for testing ONLY), and check the SSID setting and channel
setting.
7) From the laptop, try to connect. See what the lights on the
router do. See if the SSID for the router is offered as an available
network.
8) Check router log and wireless card diagnostics.

Cheers,

Chuck
