File Share access on VPN Server

I have RAS configured on my File Server. I have no issues connecting to VPN
and then using resources from other machines. However, if I try to connect
to the VPN server to access files I am unable to. Also, if I try to ping
the
VPN server I am unable to. I can however connect to any other machine on my
network and do whatever I want without an issue. DNS and WINS work
perfectly.

I receive the following error when trying to connect to a share on VPN
server:

\\machinename.domain.com
The format of the specified name network name is invalid

I need access files on the VPN server. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The ping usually fails because of the filters setup on the public interface
to allow only VPN requests. You might want to try accessing the share by
specifying the internal ip address - for eg. \\w.x.y.z\sharename where
w.x.y.z is the ip address of the interface to the private network of the VPN
server.

This makes no difference.

The RAS server only has one IP address. No connections can be made to RAS
server (file sharing, Terminal Services, etc.)--nothing...but there is no
problem connecting to any other machine on network.

Thanks

Test the connection by IP address. Go to Start>Run and type \\ip\share of the server. Does it connect?

No. Like I said you are unable to connect to VPN server while connected to
VPN. Nothing works.

Thanks.

Have you checked for packet filters on the NIC? The setup wizard can
sometimes configure these on the "private" interface.

Yes, there are none at the NIC level, or at the RRAS or RRAS policy level.

Thanks.

What is your network configuration? I'm not clear when you say the ras
server only has 1 IP address.
