I can log on to the other 2 computers on my network without any problem. I
can see and change files on them also but when I try and log onto the file
server it requests a username and password although they are not needed for
accessing the files. I can ping it ok, access it from the other PC's and also
from win XP on this machine but not from Vista. I have tried entering the UN
and PW (that is used to change fileserver settings) into the box but it comes
up as incorrect. The network is set to Private and file and printer sharing
ticked in the firewall exceptions. I have tried with the firewall off as well
but still get the UN/PW request.

What OS is the file server running? How do you normally logon to the file
server on the other computers?

I think the OS is Windows NT 4.9 Server and to log onto it I just click on
its name as it shows as a workgroup computer on the network.

It shows its self with Vista, its just that it insists it needs a UN/PW

You may have to lower the security of authentication. See the post by Kaan
Demirtas in the thread titled Map SMB-Networkdrive. The default method of
authentication that Vista uses doesn't work with Windows NT. You have to go
back to an older authentication. Here's a cut and paste from the post I
mentioned above.

"2. Run secpol.msc

Under Local Policies > Security Options

Change the value of "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication
level" from "NTVLM2 responses only" to "LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2 session
security if negotiated"

I was warned to use the second option at my risk as it lowers security.
But, I didn't mind because Linux handles firewall and security.

to run secpol.msc I was unable to find the run... as in XP. So, I just
entered it in the address bar of My Computer window."

Let us know if this works. I'm guessing a bit here. I don't have an NT
server to try it on.
