File search window pane grayed out (XP)

When trying to search for a file in explorer, or from Start->Search, the pane
containing the search companion is completely grayed out. Suggestions?

Did you receive any error messages when registering the DLLs or when
reinstalling Search using INF?

No, everything appeared to work just fine... a real puzzle.
