My XP laptop died, but the hard drive was still good. I can see the files
when I hoook the hard drive up to a Vista computer. I have figured out how to
take ownership for an individual folder or file, but want to know how to take
ownership for the entire documents folder, subfolders and all files within.
Also I want to be able to import the OUTLOOK and AOL settings to my new
laptop, when I get it it. Can you help me accesss all the files with a simple
commmand so I don't have to individually change the ownershio of the
thousands of files I need, one by one?

Take ownership of the parent folder and have permissions propagate to
subfolders/files, see #5 in the Take Ownership information below.

As far as importing Outlook, you will need to locate the backup .pst
file. See this website for Outlook information:

Your AOL information is kept on AOL's servers and not on your local
computer. When you log on at AOL, you should see your mail, etc. there.

Take ownership in Vista:

Check the permissions of the file or folder the file is saved in and
take ownership:

1. Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Security tab.
3. Under Group or user names, click your name to see the permissions you
have.

To open a file, you need to have read permission. For more information
on permissions, see What are permissions?

To take ownership of a folder:

1. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then
click Properties.
2. Click the Security tab, click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
3. Click Edit. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for
an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
confirmation.
4. Click the name of the person you want to give ownership to.
5. If you want that person to be the owner of files and subfolders in
this folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check
box.
6. Click OK

I had exactly the same problem myself. And resolved it by just switching UAC
off,
without playing around with taking ownerships of files/folders. Of course,
You are to login
to Vista as administrator to switch UAC off. But the same is true if You
wish to take
ownership for folders.
