I deleted an excel file accidently. I then recovered it
using norton utilities. However, when I attempt to open
this file I get the following message. "GRAND LADIES NEW
MEMBERS FOR 2001.xls' cannot be assessed. The file may be
read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only
location. Or, the server the document is stored on may
not be responsonding." I checked the properties and read
only is not checked off, nor is hidden checked off. This
file is on a floppy not my hard drive so I could not get
it from the recycle box. I can open other files in this
floppy so my CPU is opening the A drive. Any ideas oh
what is causing the problem, and how I can access the data
on this recovered file.

Hi Diana,
Accessing an Excel file on a floppy will sooner or later, damage
or lose your file. There are a few reasons for this and they all
apply especially to floppies.
- never access a file from removable media from Excel
i.e. floppy drives, zip drives, CD drives
- your hard drive is very reliable, floppies are very unreliable
never use a floppy directly. Copy floppy to your hard drive
work with it on your hard drive, store it on your hard drive,
copy to a floppy only as a backup or to transport.
- you must have enough space on your drive or partition to be
able to store at least another file of the same size, provided
nothing goes wrong. Excel copies your file works on the copy
and then deletes the original and renames the copy.

You probably failed because the slider on diskette is set to
read-only. If that is the case and you do have a file still, you just
saved yourself a lot of grief if you follow the above.

Take a look at my page on Backup and recovery
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/backup.htm

This is great info - (I have the same issue) - but it
doesn't tell how to get the data. I can see that it is on
the disk, it shows the file takes up 224kb space - but I
get "Documentname.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be
read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only
location. Or, the server the document is stored on may
not be responding." when I try to access it. All other
files I can access. Is there a specific way I can
retrieve this file? I read through your page but didn't
find specifics to my situation. Thank you!

Hi Christina,
Did you copy the file from the floppy to the hard drive before
attempting to open. (stated in post, and on website).

Once on the harddrive did you turn off the read-only bit,
before attempting to access the file.

More information on my page on Backup and recovery
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/backup.htm--

Yes, I copied to the harddrive (desktop) and attempted to
open.

The read-only was not checked. Hence the reason for my
confusion on why it's saying "read-only" when it's not.

The file is saying read only because it was interupted in the process of saving
and therefore the internal check was not cleared.

When Excel saves a file, it takes the file, writes a copy of the file, deletes
the original and names the copy the file name you selected. If for any chance
it is interupted this does not totally happen and the original file is
corrupted.

The ways to interupt are numerous, power surge, not enough room on the disk, bad
sector on the disk, removing the disk before the save is complete

This is why it is important not to save to drives other than the HD

I understand file corruption - I was first trying to
determine if the file was actually corrupted or just being
a PITA and to see if anyone knew a work around.

My second thought was perhaps someone on here would know
how to recover the file - or at least a program that
doesn't cost $150 to recover one file.

Copy the file from the flopy to your HD and open it there. If you cannot
open it, it may be absolutely and irretreiveably corrupted. If it is
corrupted, there is no workaround and no free wy to extract the data.

Before you slash your wrists, you may want to try to open the file with
Excel XP, as it is supposed to better at opening files that earlier versions
"see" are corrupts. You can also try to reference the file from within a
blank workbook:
=[CorruptFile.xls]Sheet1!A1

Perhaps you do not understand the concept of file corruption. A file that
has been "corrupted" cannot be retrieved by normal means. OTOH, "abnormal
means" could could include hiring a data recovery service to retrieve the
data. If there were no consequence to having a corrupted file, fewer tears
would be shed when it happens. The best advise is offered by numerous
people, including all MVP's: 1. DO NOT open files on a floppy. 2. DO NOT
open an Excel file with Word.
