Hello,

I would like to re-name a large # of files in a folder at one time, but only
re-name a PORTION of the file-name.

Example: documents are in a series:

h333_joansmith_101.doc
h334_joansmith_105.doc etc, etc.

I would like to change all doc's changing the "joansmith" part to
"bobjones".

Is this do-able? I am fairly familar with DOS commands, use of wildcard
(*.*) stuff, etc, if this can be done in DOS. Unfortunately, a lot of the
filenames are more than the 8.3 dos character limit.

thanks for any help on this..

Please see the following Knowledge Base Article:

If you rename them all with the same name as outlined in the article, A
number will be added to the name.

I've not found this method to be the most flexible. There are some third
party freeware utilities that offer more flexibility. You might want to
check Google using File Rename or something similar. I use a product called
Rename-It and there are free versions out there but the version I have is
from a different developer than ones I've found on Google and I can't vouch
for them from personal experience.

You can use Rename-It as your search criteria as well.
