File problems between OS X Client and 2000 Advanced Server

Folks,

I'm working with a large client who has a complex Windows2000 Advanced
server setup which I can not modify. They have a group of Mac users running
OS X (10.2.8 second rev) which can access the servers through smb with no
problem. The Mac's are using Photoshop 7.01 and Illustrator 10.03 along with
QuarkXPress 5.0 under Classic mode. It appears that when photoshop and
illustrator files are copied to the server they lose their association with
the applications and neither they nor QuarkXPress can find and work with
them appropriately.

I was under the impression that native OS X applications no longer used the
resource fork, so connecting via smb instead of afp should not present a
problem in this scenario. While I'm checking on this with Apple & Adobe, I
thought I would check here as well.

Any suggestions on what might cause this problem? Any other information I
should be requesting from the IT folks who run the server.

Thank you!

Hi Richard!

If files are being saved to the server when connected via SMB, you are
correct that the resource forks will be lost.

In place of these, your files must have the proper two, three or four
character extensions to help identify the types of files. Photoshop files
are .psd, Illustrator files are .ai and QuarkXPress files are .qxd.

Hope this helps! bill
