Hi,

A little background. I have 1 PC (XP PRo SP2) connected via ethernet to a
Netgear DG834GT adls/ router. I also have 2 laptops (1 XP Pro SP2 and 1
Vista HP) connected wirelessly. I also have a canon printer attached via USB
to the PC. This set up works fine, internet, file and print
sharing...everything.

Because of inconsistent signal strength I introduced a BT Home Hub (HH) as a
wireless access point (not connected to the telephone). I now connect the
two laptops to the HH and the HH links wirelessly to the Netgear. I have got
internet access for both laptops but can find no way of getting file and
print sharing to working between the laptops and the PC.

The netgear settings are:
IP 192.168.0.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP server on
IP range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.253
Channel 11
Uses WEP encryption
WDS mode enabled for wireless repeater mode bridging

The HH settings are
IP 192.168.254
Subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP server is off
IP range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.253
Channel 11
WDS mode enabled
Firewall off

On the Netgear I can see the HH and laptops are "attached devices"
The two laptops can see each other, but can't see the PC
The PC can't see either of the laptops
No settings on the laptops have been changed
All computers are part of the same MSHOME workgroup
The printer is set to be shared
There are folders on all computers that are shared

Whatever I try just doesn't fix the problem. I keep thinking it's either
the HH is not passing the network requests through (but as the firewall is
off everything should be going through fine), or there is something within
the Netgear that is causing the problem, but as the laptops worked fine when
connected to it, I can't think what it would be. I'm totally confused.

This is driving me absolutely nuts, so before I go insane could anyone of
you very kind people offer any suggestions or advice please.

Many thanks
Malc

Malc,

IP 192.168.0.1

IP range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.253

OK, it looks like the HH is setup properly as an access point (repeater). I
presume that its IP address is actually 192.168.0.254? My guess is that you
have a segmented workgroup; with the 2 laptops using WiFi connectivity, this
will happen.

You can diagnose the problem, using logs from "browstat status" and "ipconfig
/all", from each computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the advice. It's taken me a while to get through it all and to
be honest I'm getting a little confused. I'm no newbie but networking is a
bit of a black art and I'm worried that I might just make matter worse.

Following your comment about my IP address I have followed an article (link
from your site) and made the following changes:

HH IP - 192.168.0.2
DCHP Server off

Netgear IP - 192.168.0.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP Server on
Range 192.168.0.50 - 192.168.0.254

I've restricted my attempts to the PC that is connected via ethernet and a
single Laptop connected wirelessly. Both machine are running XP Pro SP2. So
far I've checked:
* Restrictananymous - Ok on PC and Laptop
* HiddenServer - Ok on PC and Laptop
* RestrictNullSessionAccess - Ok on both
* Disabled the Computer Browser and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper services on the
Laptop
* Specifically enabled NetBIOS (network properties) on both.
* Run CDiag on the PC but it only found itself, nothing for the laptop
* I also noticed I had an nVidia network controller and there mention of a
hidden firewall. However after reviewing the removal steps I don't have the
Network Access Manager so don't believe I'm affected by this

Unfortuantely none of this has helped. I've therefore taken browstat,
ipconfig, net config server and net config workstation logs and I'd be really
grateful if you could have a look through

PC Name - ROCKET (allocated 192.168.0.51 & 192.168.0.52 Have got 2
etherenet connections)
Laptop Name - LAPTOP (allocated 192.168.0.50)

PLEASE NOTE - The second laptop (Vista) on the network is called HERCULES.
This name is mentioned in the logs from the 1st laptop

Malc,

This is where I would start.

Server is active on
NwlnkIpx (0013d4c226f6)
NetBT_Tcpip_{B9E8569E-CEA6-43E7-AD14-CDBBF2E9345E} (0013d4c226f6)

NetbiosSmb (000000000000)
NwlnkNb (000000000002)

Simplify that!

Rocket is your browse master, and Rocket has
1) 2 Ethernet adapters
2) IPX/SPX.
3) NetBEUI

Get rid of one Ethernet connection. Rocket right now is using "192.168.0.51"
and "192.168.0.52". That's one too many. Dual homed servers are a problem for
Windows Networking.

I would dispense with the nVidia nForce connection.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/02/hidden-personal-firewall-nvidia-nforce.html

And get rid of IPX/SPX and NetBEUI, on both Laptop and Rocket!

Hi Chuck,

First of all, thanks for your continued help with this....it's very much
appreciated.

Ok, I've now got Rocket (PC-ethernet) and Laptop (Wireless) set with just
the following network properties:
* Client for Microsoft Networks
* File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
* Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
(Confirm both are set explicitly to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP)

I've disconnected and disabled the nVidia nForce controller.

Internet access is fine but unfortuantely they still unable to communicate
with each other.

I've added a new set of logs for both machines, but I have nocticed
something odd...Rocket can "see" Laptop in My Network Places, but can't
access any of the shared folders and brings up the message "\\Laptop is not
accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource -
Network path not found". However on LAPTOP I can see the MSHOME workgroup
but can't see any computer within it. It gives the message "Mshome is not
accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource -
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"

Here are the new logs for both machines:

Hi Chuck,

I wanted to make sure there was no s/w on the computers that might be
causing problems so I disconnected form the internet and disabled all
security applications. The problem persists but I think I can rule out a/v
and firewall conflicts. For comleteness I use:
a/v - NOD32
Firewall - Windows
Anti-Spy - Webroot Spysweeper

Also, I mentioned in a previous post that I'd disabled the Computer Browser
and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper services. I tried starting each one separately to
see if it made any difference; the TCP/IP one made no difference but with the
Computer Browser service started I could "see" LAPTOP within the MSHOME group
and BROWSTAT returned

Malc,

You'll want the browser running on one of the computers - with just 2 computers,
you COULD use either one. I would use the desktop computer, for consistency.
<http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>
http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html

Do you have NetBT explicitly Enabled on both computers?
<http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2006/07/advanced-windows-networking-using.html>
http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2006/07/advanced-windows-networking-using.html

If you start the browser on ONE computer, and if NetBT is Enabled on both
computers, and you still see "There are 1 servers", then you have a problem with
SMBs being blocked. And that will be a personal firewall issue.

Post a full set of diagnostics, periodically, so we can keep track of the
changes, please.

Chuck,

Thanks for hte info and I think I've narrowed it down to either the Netear
router or the HomeHub.

Both Rocket and Laptop have NetBT explicitly enabled and both have only the
following network properties:
* Client for Microsoft Networks
* File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
* Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

There is no personal firewall software on either computer; only the Windows
one which I've turned off.

This points to your reference to the blocking of SMBs, so I connected both
computers via ethernet to the Netgear and everything worked with Rocket being
the master browser. I then connected both computers to the HH and again
everything worked perfectly.

This means the blocking must be occurring on either the HH or the Netgear.
Unfortuantely this is where I get stuck (again !!). The firewall on the HH
is disabed and there are only the default firewall rules running on the
Netgear, so in theory it should work. Unfortuantely the logs on the Netgear
show no evidence of anything being blocked and there is no logging available
on the HH. Do you know of any way that I can debug this further.

Many thanks again
Malc

Malc,

The "firewall" on most NAT routers (those that have a "firewall") works between
the WAN and the LAN, it's not a force in the switch that's connected to the LAN.
However, some newer NAT routers may have a feature called "isolation mode" or
similar.
<http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>
http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html

How about you post a full set of updated diagnostic logs, from both computers,
again. That's where I would start, if "isolation mode" isn't part of the
problem.

Hi Chuck,

By "isolation mode" I believe this relates to what Netgear call a DMZ
server. This is not enabled. I've tried a couple of other things:

* Setting up a firewall rule in the Netgear to allow all inbound and
outbound TCP & UDP traffic on ports 137 - 139. Didn't work.
* Reset the Windows Firewall to it's factory defaults on both computers.
File and print sharing was allowed under exceptions (Services included TCP
139, TCP 445, UDP 137 & UDP138 under a scope of "Subnet". Still no joy.

The new logs for both ROCKET and LAPTOP are as follows:

Malc,

DMZ is generally an open server port, so any computer attached to the DMZ is
exposed as a server to the Internet as a whole. That's vaguely similar, but not
the same. Isolation Mode separates each computer, so each has Internet access
and no more.

That's not the case here though. Browstat for Rocket shows
There are 2 servers in domain MSHOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{25F84006-C574-46E5-AA16-FD2F9DBFB428}

Unfortunately, browstat for laptop shows still
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

Both computers show
Server is active on
NetbiosSmb (000000000000)
NetBT_Tcpip ...

So, you have to look for a firewall on Laptop. What antivirus protection is it
using?

A distant possibility is LSP / Winsock corruption.

Chuck,

Thanks for the clarification on the DMZ. I've now found the "isloation
mode" option on the Netgear and it's disabled.

I don't believe that it's a LSP / Winsock issue because although I've been
doing the investigation on LAPTOP, the 2nd laptop that runs Vista HP displays
the same symptoms. However, to be 100% sure, I have worked through the steps
but unfortunately it didn't work.

Both laptops run NOD32 anti-virus so that might be the source, however in
one of my previous tests I disabled all elements of the application and still
had problems. I also run Webroot SpySweeper, so I tried the same test by
turning off NOD32, Spysweeper and Windows firewall, but still no joy. I
guess it's possible that some component remains resident even when the
application is disabled, but I've no idea how I would find it

Hopefully a solution will turn up. I just hope I've not missed something
really obvious

Cheers

Malc,

Check the instructions for NOD32, and see if it includes an anti-worm component,
which will block SMBs just as you are seeing. Turning NOD32 off won't disable
the anti-worm protection.

Chuck,

Thanks for the continued support.

I couldn't be sure whether there was a worm element so I uninstalled NOD32
from both ROCKET and LAPTOP, rebooted both machines but they are still unable
to connect.

Cheers,
Malc
