Microsoft Word documents? Yes.
How? Use the built in help system in Word. It explains it quite well.

In Wordpad documents? No.
In Notepad documents? No.

Could you create a Zip File (treated as a folder in Windows XP) and password
protect said file?
Yes.
If you do not have a third party application (such as Winzip or WinRAR or
some other compression utility that may have taken over the functionality of
compressed file manipulation) installed - it will allow people to see the
list of files - but not access them without the password.
How? Use the built in Windows Help & Support from the start menu to search
for "compressed folder".

Other options might be (in a Windows XP Professional or superset
environment) Encrypted File System (EFS) - but you need to read up on proper
management of these or risk losing everything - even from yourself.

thanks... :D

WinRAR can actually encrypt the filenames too - the user is prompted for the
password even before the list of names pops up.

Rather useful :)
Steve.
