File opening problems from IE

I am having trouble opening a specific file type from Internet Explorer.
The file extension is .mdf. When I click on a link to this file type I
would like a box to pop up asking me whether I want to open this file or
save it to disk. What happens though, is, IE tries to open the file on its
own thinking it knows how to view the file, but all I get is a bunch of
garbage text. I would greatly appreciate any ideas that any one might have.
Thank you.

Is there any indication on the Web site you got it from what program should
be used?
I don't have a file association for MDF.

Thanks for responding. I actaully have the program and if I save the file
and open it, things work fine. The issue is really getting IE to launch the
program, not try to open the file.

I need it to do this due to business processes. Thanks again.

Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to the file type in question (MDF in this case) and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Check the box for "Confirm open after download".
