Also, in Word 2002 using file/open, is there a way to make
the listing of files there come up in the same layout each
time, say always with the files listed in order of the
most recent to the least recent? It seems to default
somehow each time I use it, and not hold my settings?

In Word, choose Open. Use the Views button at the top of the dialog box to
select Details. In Details view, you have several columns of info, including
Modified. If you click on the column header, it will sort the column. A
second click on the same header will sort in the reverse order. All columns
can be used for sorting.
Once you've selected and decided on your sort order, use the Views button to
switch to your desired view. The sort order will be kept. Open a file if
you wish.
Word should "remember" this setting, unless you are on a network environment
where user profiles are reset regularly.

Good luck!

thanks, works fine. I note that you cannot set different
formats at different levels of directories, right? It is
the way you set it at the subfolder level at all levels?
