I am in the process of cleaning up my drives and have noticed several files
with numbers and letters that I can not access, such as 007D8200-8C388C38,
they also have a backup copy in the same folder. I have searched the web to
no avail, does anyone have a clue as to what these are or how I can open
them and can I delete them without repercussions?

Hugh

Hi,
Where are these files located (folder/directory?)

If you (right-click) check Properties- version, created date, etc. is there
a hint as to which program created them?

Is there a message (error message/dialog) when you attempt to delete one of
these files?

Don
[MS MVP- IE]

They are in the directory of several of my logical drives and no I can not
determine what program created them. I tried to open them with several
diferent programs such as Adobe Reader and Notepad to no avail, I even tried
Index Spy software. I have not tried to delete them not knowing if they are
important or not. They all are listed as files with a 4KB size and all have
a backup of themselves. I am using XP w/SP2.

You need to name the directory path? What is the file extension?

They sit right in the root directory of several of my logical drives. There
is no file extension and the file type is just listed as "file".

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and
verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked
and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need
to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that
the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.

Can you now provide a file extension?

I've done that. I tried to send a screen shot of the property page but OE
would not allow it.

The file extension is three letters preced by a dot after
007D8200-8C388C38.

We need a clue to take this forward.

Use a handle tool to find out who has a handle on the files.
Sysinternals Process Explorer or Handle or OH.exe from one of the
Resource Kits will reveal who has a handle on the files.
