File .MSWMM not found despite being present

In MS Movie Maker, I have a large project with about 1500 photos, music and
transitions etc. In the middle of previewing the movie, it stopped with the
message insufficient memory. After defragging and using Norton Speed up, I
can see the saved project in my file, look at its properties etc, but when
wanting to open it, I get the following message.

"The file "C:\DOCUMENT\....etc.MSWMM" could not be found. Verify that the
file has not been deleted, renamed, or moved, and then try again."

This is rather puzzling, as I can open other projects without problems.

Any advice on how to open this project would be much appreciated as I have
10 mates each expecting to receive a DVD of our surfing trip to the Mentawais
very soon.

Did you try running Disk Cleanup?

1500 image files is a very large project...
it's not surprising that you received an
error about insufficient memory.

Just wondering if you tried double left
clicking the .mswmm file? Do you get
the same error if you open Movie Maker
and go to...File / Open Project?

Thank you for the comments. I had not used Disk Cleanup previously, but I did
a few minutes back. However, this had no impact.

I had previously tried double left clicking to open the file, in addition to
right clicking for Open As, and Open. These still gave the same result. I
tried these opening options again after running Disk Cleanup, but,
unfortunately I got the same result.

Mmmm - looks grim at this stage, but I will keep my fingers crossed.

Ok...you state that the program stopped
in the middle of *viewing* the .mswmm
file. This doesn't sound like a corrupt file,
it simply sounds like limited resources.

Did you ever attempt to save the project
in a movie format? .wmv or .avi?

Then you report that you defragged...
which should help the program to access
the files more efficiently.

Then you say...you ran Norton Speed Up.
What is Norton Speed Up? It sounds like
this may be where the issue began.

There's a slim chance that doing a system
restore to a time before this issue occurred
could have a positive result.

try opening the project file in Bruce Shankle's Windows Movie Maker
Utility.... a free download from

http://www.bruceshankle.com/_mgxroot/page_10765.html

if it opens it and lists the source files, than there's a chance it's not
corrupt beyond repair.... if not, it's a second strike against it, after
Movie Maker being the first.

The 3rd pitch would be to take a copy of the project file to another
computer and open it.... the source files are not needed to open a project
file in Movie Maker....

To John Inzer

Unfortunately I did not try to save my project in a movie format like .wmv
or .avi.

I also made a mistake when I stated I ran Norton Speed Up - It was actually
called Norton Speed Disk. It appears to work rather similarly to defragging.

Following your suggestion, I have tried a couple of times to do a system
restore, but both times after going through the process, I got an error
message to say that the system would not restore to the two particular times
I nominated. I will keep trying until I get the System Restore to work.

Many thanks

Many thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately when I ran Bruce Shankle's
program it would not list the source files. I tried Bruce's program on other
Movie Maker projects and it worked OK. Obviously there is something
specifically wrong with this particular project file.

Following your last suggestion, I will try to take the file to another
computer later today and see if it works there. I will let you know the
outcome.

Ok...Speed Disk is similar ro Windows
XP Error Checking (ScanDisk).

The following link explains what it does:

(315265) How to Perform Disk Error Checking
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315265
(this should run before Defrag...if it finds
errors it should be run again and again until
no errors are found)

Here's what Defrag does:

(314848) How to Defragment Your Disk
Drive Volumes in Windows XP

Try running System Restore in Safe Mode.
