I have a big picture collection, which I imported from CDs. For some
unknown reason, someone injected a "thumbs.db" in a great many folders.
This was not on the old computer, and unwanted on this computer.

Does anyone know if this was done by Windows XP? I tried mass searching
for thumbs.db, but they would not delete, claiming to be system files!!

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thumbs.db is the 'mini-version' of the pics, stored in a database file for
use by the Thumbnail view setting.
Try this. Set the Details view setting for some folder containing a
thumbs.db. Delete the file, then set to Thumbnail view, and see the file get
recreated. (Any other View selection would not result in this)

I guess I was not clear enough in my stating of the situation. I am
looking through a vast quantity of pictures, sorting, deleting, and
renaming. I need Windows popping an addition file into my folders like I
need a hole in the head, and this never happened this way on the old
computer with the exact same software.

FWIW, I am not viewing the pix in any Microsoft package, but rather one
called Irfanview. Any assistance to this annoyance would be gratefully
and vastly appreciated.

It's not the software, it's your settings.

Thumbs.db is a hidden file and doesn't show by default. Your old system
was honouring that setting; your new system is set to show hidden files.

This is "solution by 1000 cuts"… See if IrfanView has an option not to
show hidden files. PMView (similar S/W) has. Most software has.

okay, I think I'm hearing you. I will set the folder options not to show
hidden system files, and perhaps I won't get scolded for deleting
folders with unwanted thumbs in unwanted places (think about that)

many thanx for posting!!!
