Hi
I've been trying to delete a .avi file for a long time and it keeps telling
me cannot delete file file may be in use by another application. I tried to
move it to recycle bin and also get the same message.
I have tried deleting it through the dos window and from the explorer
window.
I know that nothing else is accessing it. All media players are closed and
no editing software are open.
I have tried restarting and that doesn't work.
Thanks
Bill

Thanks for the advice. I tried to do that and it told me that it couldn't
find the file....I see the file both in the cmd prompt and the explorer
folder and can even play the file. Weird stuff.
Thanks
Bill

Well then.
My point would be, and there are plenty here to agree with me, that cross
posting is considered rude and therefore a lot of people here won't even
bother to answer posts they see on multiple newsgroups. If you post to a NG
and don't get a useful answer in a reasonable amount of time then post the
question to another NG. Don't cross post or your likely to get the response
you got from me on a regular basis.
I WAS helpful in pointing you back to your microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics
post
There are "helpful" answers for you on THAT post.

I don't understand where you got the cross-posting. I posted a similar
message in another ng, but not the same message. cross-posting is posting
the same message in multiple groups.
what ng's did I cross post to, BTW?\

Thanks again! I restarted the pc and it worked!!

Ok it was posting essentially the same question in 2 different NG's.
Actually my first message wsn't meant as an attack I was trying to point yo
to the other NG because I saw your post and the responses.

I got defensive when you got defensive. So now lets be offensive instead.
Did any of the suggestions on the other post solve your problem?

yeah actually the first post from hillbillybuddhist solved it after I
restarted the computer. On the other group I was recommended a program that
helped to find what the prob was. It's here:
http://www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe/
That's a nifty little program!
Yeah I don't want to start stuff either. I figured I'd post it in the
Microsoft group since it had something to do with it
Thanks

I don't agree. There's nothing wrong with crossposting, if it's
to a *few* newsgroups, and they are all related newsgroups, any
of which is likely to provide an answer to the question.

Cross-posting gets its bad reputation because it's often a tool
of spammers, who broadcast a single message across many unrelated
newsgroups. *That* kind of crossposting is certainly bad, but not
all crossposting is.

And cross-posting is always better than the alternative,
multiposting--sending the same message *separately* to multiple
newsgroups. Multiposting has all the same disadvantages of
crossposting, but also fragments the thread, so that a reply in
one newsgroup isn't seen in the other newsgroups.

Posted *separately*?

Ah, but that's not crossposting, that's multiposting--far worse
than crossposting.

** Thank you Ken for seeing my point. But it's all better now, were happy
campers.

Point well taken but it is also frustrating to download post after post just
to read the same thing.
And actually to the point of your other post your right cross posting isn't
so bad really. I jusr discovered that OE automatically marks the cross posts
as read in all the NG's it is the multiple posting that is a problem. I'll
remember that point.

Yes, I think most newsreaders do.
