File import error message

Hi all,

In an effort to make sure all my local and server files are in sync, I
deleted my local files and attempted to import the site onto my local hard
drive using Front Page. The import stops with the error message "You
specified identical destination filenames for some of the files you are
trying to copy. Make sure all destination files have unique names and try
again." I am not sure exactly what this means--particularly since this is a
complete site import and I did not specify anything except for the folder the
site gets imported into--or how to find which of the many files might be
generating the error. The log file only shows the error message and provides
no details. I'm stumped.

It means that you are importing from a Unix/Linux server and you have 2 or more files with the same
name. Under Unix/Linux, Index.htm and index.htm are considered to be two different files, whereas
under Windows they would be considered to be one and the same. So you will need to open the live
site and rename or delete the duplicate files.

If the remote server has the FP extensions, you need to open it directly in FP and make your
changes, then use File Menu | Publish Web / Site back to your local machine. Do not use the web
import function.

Thanks Thomas. I'll give it a try.

Thomas--a p.s. As I track this down, how does Unix/Linix treat extensions.
For example, would it consider index.htm and index.shtml to be the same name?

Clay

No and neither would Windows.

I have recently started seeing the same error message when I try to publish
changes to my Web site. But I'm running Windows XP Professional (with SP2 and
all updates). I use Office System (i.e., Frontpage 2003), and my host runs
Windows server software, not Unix or Linux.

I have tried syncing individual pages and folders from my local hard drive
to the server, and that seems to work most of the time. But when I attempt to
publish all changes, Frontpage displays the error message and terminates the
sync. Unfortunately, the error message gives no indication of which files are
causing the problem. I'm stumped.

What is the actual error message, and do you get when publishing the Change Page Only publishing
option?

The error message reads:

You specified identical file names for some of the files you are trying to
copy. Make sure all destination files have unique names and try again.

This message is puzzling, since when I get an earlier message about file
conflicts, I specify that Frontpage should overwrite the remote files. It's
strange, because, as you know, when you copy files using the Windows
Explorer, you can overwite a file with a duplicate file name. So I'm puzzled
about what's going on and which files are the culprits.

Thanks for any help.

Ok, the problem is that the remote server is running the Unix/Linux OS, and IS case sensitive.
Meaning that Index.htm, index.htm and INDEX.HTM are treated as 3 individual files, whereas Windows
IS NOT case sensitive and the 3 files would be considered as one and the same, thereby generating
the error message you are seeing.

You have to open your live/remote site and delete or rename any files that are spelled the same, but
have a different case.

Alas, that can't be the problem. My remote server runs Windows server
software, not Unix/Linux. (I know my host well--he's hosted my Web site for
several years, and this problem only recently appeared--long after I started
using Office System, etc.

I've used the two-pane view in FrontPage to examine the folders and files on
both my local hard drive and the remote Web site, and I can't find
discrepancies in the file names. And I've updated my site frequently, and
I've never encountered this problem before. My searches of the Microsoft KB,
the Microsoft Web site, and other information sources on the Web have proven
fruitless.

Thanks again for your help.

Then have your host run a check on the extensions on his end and/or check the permissions for your
account.

I'm having the SAME "Problems"! I'm using Windows XP & "Front Page 2003", my
Server is using Windows Op. System, NOT Linex or anything else.

Open the live/remote site in FP and look for files with the same name but different CaSe. Example:
Index.htm and INDEX.HTM are 2 different files under the Unix/Linux OS, but considered to be one and
the same under Windows, this is what the error message is telling you that need to be fix. Do not
use the import method, use the File Publish method or a FTP application to download the site to a
folder on your HD, then open that folder in FP.

My Server does NOT use Unix/Linux OS. I can not find ANY Files with the
same name! ( I've got HUNDREDS in there!)
