File Growth in PowerPoint

C

Clinton Winchester

Can some one please explain the outrageous file size growth that occurs when
copying/pasting images (350KB) into blank slides VERSUS the more intensive
process of inserting. File growth is 350 KB to 380KB when inserting
pictures. File growth (outrageous!) is 350KB to 15.5MB in cut/paste mode
per slide!
Office/PP version is variant of 2000 as used by EDS for Navy NMCI contract.

This feature does not occur with PP XP (2002).

Thanks in advance
Clint

Cut and Paste copies a lot more then just the picture, it copies the cut
source's information about the picture and possibly even a copy of the cut
source's program. If it was just the picture, it would be easy, true, but
PowerPoint has to know enough about the object to be able to recreate the
edit session from the cut source when an object is edited from within
PowerPoint..

Insert is always the preferred method since it allows the editing program to
complete it's session and store only the resulting picture.

It'll depend on the app you copy/paste from, and if you choose Paste Special,
As XXX (where XXX is e.g. JPG or PNG) you won't see the file growth, most
probably.

When you copy/paste from apps that are OLE "servers" you're pasting an OLE
object, not an image; the object contains a picture of the image in WMF
format, meaning that the image is stored within the WMF as an uncompressed BMP
and left that way by PowerPoint.

It's not a PowerPoint fault but a side effect of the way OLE works.

Oh, another thing ... I forgot to ask what you meant by the "more intensive
process of inserting". Perhaps there's a way to smooth that road ...
