Running Windows XP Professional

When I select a folder, As administrator, and right click
and go to property's, it has grayed out the ability to
choose private folder and other users on this PC can
delete files from that folder, not networking,

This was my main reason for buying XP Professional was to
get this security.

I tried upgrade and then I did an install of it and still
do not have the ability to select private folder so other
users can not delete stuff??
thanks
Jerry

You can make folders within your profile private -- e.g. C:\Documents and
Settings\<your username> ...

Hope this helps you.

Mike

I did that and it stops other users from deleting the
files but, they can still see them.
without going in and making it invisible, it still shows
up when they log in???
thought it was more secure than this or was I
dreaming..haha
thanks!

If you did an upgrade and then a clean install without reformatting, you
are most likely using the win9x FAT32 file system, which doesn't support
permissions. You either need to convert FAT32 to NTFS or do a clean
install with a reformat, choosing NTFS instead of FAT32.

See http://www.aumha.org/a/ntfscvt.htm for full information on
converting FAT32 to NTFS.

After you do the two things I've mentioned, you then go
to the directories and files in question and change the
security settings.

I don't understand what you mean by 'still shows up when
they log in'. Can you explain that?

I'll say again, if someone has either physical access to
your hard drive, or is an Administrator on the machine, a
determined person can find your data - and read it if
it's not encrypted.

Kent,
sounds like what I "didn't do" was a reformat.
it does however say when I do a property's on my computer
that it is NTFS and not FAT32.
I will try a full format since I have no data on here
now... gheezzzz... what a headache!
thanks!!!

Dave,
when I say "still shows up when they log in" means they
can see the folder. "I thought" the security would not
even allow them to see that folder. especially the program
files and such. that is one of the biggies that I am
trying to prevent. my daughter allowing her friends on the
PC who "know everything" and want to delete stuff...
AARRGGG
I am the only administrator, everyone else has limited
access.
Thanks again!
Jerry

Jerry;
Seeing is one thing and should not be a problem.
Touching is something else.
What happens when they try to access it?
They should get Access Denied.
They should not be able to touch or delete.

You say you are the only Administrator, have you also passworded the
Administrator?
Ctrl/Alt/Del twice quickly from login screen.

You also should implement and enforce strict computer policies.
Violation of which is dealt with quickly.
In the business world, tampering or computer abuse is often dealt with
by immediate termination.
Have appropriate policies with your home computer.

As long as they have physical access, no security short of encryption
will keep them out, so policies with consequences are important.
