If the file is displayed as a .bmp, you have to save it as such. You
can then edit the image in Paint, Irfanview, or other software and
convert it to the preferred filetype. A .bmp is larger, but you can
edit it without losing its features. Lossy filetypes like .jpg and .gif
lose resolution each time you save, edit, or convert the file.

Oh, you said "animation" so it probably started as a .gif.. It might
help to install the free image viewer and editor, Irfanview. I believe
you'll see the proper options after the associations are made to Irfanview.

Also try the GIF and JPG associations repairs here:

Fix File Associations.

Mark when I right on a newsgroup picture I get the option of saving as JPEG
"my default" or BMP so I do not understand the referenced MS site.I am
using OE6 on a xp with no add on to IE6. And yes they are saved as JPEG
files.
