I am trying to open a file. Extension not visible (have changed the settings
in Folder Options but still no extension). Won't open with Word, Publisher,
Paint Shop Pro, PPT, Windows Picture and Fax viewer etc. Any ideas how I can
find out how it was created (2002) so that I can open it. I am told it's a
picture. Have tried adding jpg, jpeg, gif to the file name to give it an
extension but still no luck. Thanks for your help :))

Open it with notepad and look at it. Most files have some engliah in them somewhere.

Programs always start with MZ, bitmaps start with BM, JPEGs will have JFIF in the first few characters, GIF files start with GIF89a.

Or if it's too big for Notepad, use WordPad.

Anne, does this file have any extension at all?

Because if it does you can get a free programme called: Rename File
Extensions, you will find this at: www.leeos.com

You can use this programme to change the extension of the file which should
make it work. Hope you fid this information useful.
