When I click on a intranet file and the File download widows opens it only
gives me the option to save or cancel but not open. How can I change it back
to the default window which should give me the open option?

Hi Rob :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

If you wish to be prompted to download select 'Confirm open after download'
and deselect 'Browse in same window'.

Hope this helps.

To get the download dialog box, enable the "confirm open after download" =
option for that filetype:

Click "Start" - "Program Files" - "Windows Explorer".

Then click "Tools" - "Folder Options".

Change to the "File Type" tabs.

Scroll down to locate the file type. Highlight the filetype (example =

Then check the option "confirm open after download".

I'm having the same problem Rob. To me it appears Internet Explorer is not
recognizing the files as a file that goes with a specific program. It is
saying Unknown file type however the computer knows what program goes with
which files. It just started doing this within the past week. I'm only
getting the option to Save the file. We're not getting the option to Open it.

Hi Trae :-)

Have you tried re-associating the program it should open with? Try
associating the file type with another program, any program, log off and log
back on, and re-associate it with the correct program. See if that works.

Open Windows Explorer
Find and highlight one of the files
Click Tools>Folder Options>File type
Scroll down the list until you find the file type you want
Click Change and then OK
Close and then try it again

I can not find the .doc extension in the list of registered file types. Would
that be the reason the file download window doesn't give me the option to
open the file and how can I add doc as a registered file type?

Trae,

When you go to windows explorer>tools>folders options>file types do you show
the doc extension as a registered file type? I don't and I think that is why
file downland will not give me the option to open it. But I don't know how to
add .doc as a registered file type.

This just started for me also.

You're right, I didn't notice that before. I am adding the .doc extension as
well as the .ppt extension because that's the only ones I know of that aren't
working right now. Just go to File Types, Click New, then type in .doc or
whatever extension the file has that you are trying to download. It works,
however I don't know why this happened. I don't want to have to associate
every file I download over again.

The problem is the file types that I'm guessing are supposed to be there
aren't there. If you need a screenshot I can send you one if you want.

Hi Trae :-)

Do you have the program installed on your hard drive? If so, then you can
add them to the list.
GO t oWIndows Explorer (not IE)>Tools>Folder Options>File Type>New
Then enter the file extension for the program that is supposed to open that
file.

What type of file is it? What is the extension? Is it the right one? If
not, then change it to what it is supposed to be for the. What program is it
supposed to be opened with? Are you trying to open it from IE or your email
program? What version of Windows do you have?

You may have to reassociate new files, but, once you do this, they should
continue to open automatically with the associated programs.

Hope this helps.

Yes, you have to add it to the list for the program. However, once you have
added the .doc to the list, then find and select a document that should open
with the program, right click on it, select Open with on the dialog box and
then see if the program has been added to the list on the diallog box. If
not, the go to Tools>Folder Options>File Type and scroll in the list until
you find the .doc you just added and then click the change button, or
whichever one will set the .doc program for that file. That should allow
all other .doc files you download to open with that program, and return the
download Open option.

Hope this helps.

Hi Trae :-)
That still doesn't explain why those file types suddenly disappeared so I
had
to put them in again.

Well...there could be a number of reasons. I have had that happen as well,
especially, after installing some types of 3rd party programs. I installed
a different zip program and it changed all my zip files to that program
extension and I lost the .zip in my Files Type list, which meant that
anything that came with the .zip extension would not open. I had to
uninstall the new zip program and then go back and add in the .zip extension
in my Files Type list.

Also, it could be that your files association just became corrupted, and
that happens now and then too. So, at least now you know where to check and
how to reassociate them.
