Is there a way to keep IE from running a downloaded file in the browser when
you select "Open" in the File Download" box?

I'm within a company intranet and have a program file, used by several other
offices, that I update constantly. To ensure that each division is using the
latest version of the program, i have saved it on our web servers and gave
the divisions a URL link to the file. But when they click the link and select
"Open", IE tries to run it in the browser. How can tell it to use the native
application instead?

what is it jpg, gif, what. EXEs don't run in IE. Doc, pdf files can if you
have the addon.
Need more information (what workstations OS do you have).

Joe,

The file is a configuration for a scanning engine (xxx.qfs). I'm using XP
sp2 and IE 6.0.2 sp2.

Are you able to download a file, using the "Open" option on the File
Download window, on your workstation and have it execute outside of IE? I
haven't been able to get any type of file to do that yet on mine.

Thanks for the reply.

I just verified that the file is indeed registered and that the 'confirm
open after download' was checked but still the file is opening in IE. One
thing that i did notice last night was that my home PC, which is only running
SP1, opened the file (and even a Word file) in it's native application and
not in IE when downloaded. So apparently this is definitly possible and is
just a configuration setting somewhere.

Any more help is greatly appreciated.

Sandi - DDE is enabled. Everytime I uncheck the box and close the window, it
is reenabled when I go back in.

The crazy thing is that I've gotten a Word document to actaully open in Word
by unchecking the 'Browse in same window' checkbox BUT my file still tries to
open in IE no matter what combination of options i select in the File Type
tab.

Do you have a public link to use as an example?

One possibility is that the MIME type of the file is not correct
for doing what you want. If it is in the TIF you can browse the
Content.IE5\index.dat and find the file's Content-Type in there.

Since you're using XPsp2 you could try toggling the new Security option
which overrides that action, in Miscellaneous section:

Open files based on content, not file extension

Good luck
