When i save a file to a floppy disk on another computer,
then try to access the data on my own computer, regardless
of file extension, the file always fails to open. This
when tried on the machine it was originally written on
remains unreadable. The filename is also affected and is
converted to 8 character dos format. I would appreciate
it if someone could help me as this puts me at great
inconvinience as the coputer is used daily for a large
company.

Floppy disks become corrupt at the drop of a hat. They are VERY unreliable.
You can try formatting it again or another floppy. Best solution is to
forget the old floppy disk method and get a cdrw burner and some cdrw's. Or
if the computer are networked, then move files to shares instead of using
floppies.

What is the Operating System that your useing to save the
file? I had a similar problem on one of my Linux
computers in that the file wouldn't open on my Windows XP
but formating the floppy to be Windows compatable fixed it.

I wonder if you might be running into something simmiler.

This smells to me awfully like a defective floppy oontroller on your
machine. Check to see if you can write a file *on* it and read it back
after taking it out and replacing it. If not then its repair shop - and
probably means in practice a replacement motherboard
