File Corruption (?)

I'm using XP SP2 and some files MAY have been corrupted as some programs that
previously ran fine either now have errors or refuse to run at all. This may
have been to an aborted SP3 installation or some other installation problem.
I notice that some files such as SHELL32.DLL in Windows/System have the same
date as on my work computer but a different file length. Is there a tool to
check all of the crucial Windows files to make sure they are in good shape,
in the right location, etc.?

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Are there any problems indicated in the System and Application logs?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Thanks very much. I had completely forgotten about sfc. I ran it and we'll
see what happens. BTW, on a "hint" that a problem might exist with the
SHELL32.DLL file, I checked three different computers, all running XP PRO/SP2
and all supposedly with all updates installed. The length of the file was
different on the problem computer from the other two. We'll see if sfc was
able to replace that file and any other damaged files.

Thanks again.

Best of luck.
